January's Full Moon
After the splendid 'Full Moon Tuesday' evening in December, we hope to repeat the same again this month.
First, thanks again to Jon Fyne for leading us up over Mam Tor last month and, thanks to his intimate knowledge of the area, a moderately dry descent of Cave Dale. Clear skies gave us great conditions for witnessing the moon's rise over the horizon by Win Hill. Cold, stiff winds added to the adventure and the sense of relief that we hadn't tried to go climbing instead! Two hours later we were enjoying a fine pint in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese where at least one other group voiced envy at our endeavour.
For this month, given the prevailing weather, a similar evening looks like the best bet. The actual Full Moon is again a couple of days prior to next Tuesday so another spectacular moon rise could be ours for the taking. But, we'd like a VOLUNTEER to lead the evening. Any Buxtonians out there perhaps familiar with the intricacies of an ascent of Chrome and Parkhouse Hills? With the Quiet Woman to reward our efforts? Or something else? Just 'reply' here and we'll follow (if the weather is good enough on the night!).

Hi
Moonrise will be just after 18.00 on the 10th so that is fine.
If one want light for most of the trip, it is normally better to go when the moon is waxing. It would then be high in the sky mid way through a walk. Need to look at when it is at its highest and what the illumination is. See for example

Perhaps attendees can discuss in the pub what is best - seeing the moon rise or seeing the surroundings during the walk!

As nobody has picked up the Buxton suggestion, how about a walk from the Monsall Head(car park to left of hotel) over Longstone Edge? Only 15 minutes beyond Buxton for you westies and easily accessible from A623 to Stoney via B6465. Meet 6.30pm for prompt 6.45pm departure and beers in Monsall Head pub afterwards. Interested parties can discuss on new year walk on Sunday...
Meet Monsal Head Hotel on Tuesday 10th January at 6.30pm for prompt 6.45pm departure.
Meet in the car park on left (South side) of Monsal Head Hotel

A 4-5 mile walk over Longstone Edge, through Great Longstone village and back along the Monsal Trail followed by beers in the Stables Bar of Monsal Head pub. Walk can be broken with a beer in the village and easily be shortened if necessary but it looks like it will be dry though perhaps cloudy.
See you there!
Apparently my suggestion is 'not of interest to the Mynydd', so Longstone Edge is the venue. See you there on Tuesday.
Was just about to post a suggestion for White Edge with a pint in the Grouse afterwards. The views from there on a clear night are pretty impressive, and we can visit the stone circle on top of Froggatt if we have time. But I am happy to go with Longstone Edge, perhaps not as atmospheric, but a nice walk too and the Monsal Head is a very nice pub :-)
